Gubbi means sparrow.

They used to sit on every window ledge in this city. Stealing rice from ajji’s kitchen, losing every argument with a crow.

Then one day, you noticed they weren’t.

Nobody saw them go. That’s how it happens with small things.

Handcraft is going the same way.

Quietly. Not because it got worse. Because it stopped talking about the way we live.

The skill never left. The relevance did.

Hands that know exactly what they’re doing, and finishes no factory bothers with. Somewhere along the way, all of it got stuck making the same three things.

  • Last seen makingSouvenirs.
  • Last seen makingKids’
    toys.
  • Last seen makingGuilt
    shopping.

So we’re making it cool again.

Not charity. Not nostalgia. Objects with a personality about how we live now, made the slow way by people who are very good at it.

Make your own joke.

Every piece starts as a line like these. Then someone very good with their hands takes it completely seriously. Pick one or write yours, then slap it on the lid.

Got a better one? Send it to us. The best lines might end up hand-turned.

Made by hand. Slowly. On purpose.

No moulds, no injection, no factory floor. For Collection 01: wood turned true by eye, colour pressed on by friction, a finish no machine bothers with. That’s why it lasts.

  2. 2036 Your phone has been replaced six times. It’s still on the desk.
  3. 2056 The screens have disappeared. The wooden one’s still here.
  4. 2076 The robots are human-maxxing now. You still have this.

No updates. No chargers. No subscription. Just a thing that stays.

Toys, or grown-up things?

Grown-up things. Funny, handcrafted decorative objects for adult desks and shelves. Not a toy, 14+.

What is Collection 01 made of?

Hand-turned ivory wood (hale mara), friction-applied lac colour, laser-marked. The same tradition that made the gombe on your ajji’s shelf, with slightly more existential dread on the base.

How big are they?

Desk-sized. Between 3 and 12 cm tall, depending on the character. Big enough to have a presence, small enough to survive a desk move.

Where is Collection 01 made?

In Channapatna, Karnataka. Ivory wood (hale mara), friction-applied lac colour, laser-marked. Each piece is hand-turned, so small differences are part of the object.

Is this a pre-order? When does it ship?

Yes. Reserve your pieces and share your contact details. Nothing is charged and no card details are asked for. When pieces are ready, we email a payment link, ask for your delivery address and confirm shipping cost and timing.

Can I cancel my reservation?

Any time before you pay, by replying to our email. A reservation is not a purchase and carries no obligation to buy. Full details are on the shipping and returns page.

Can I gift one?

That is very much the idea. Add a gift note when you reserve and we will put it in the box, handwritten. No prices on the packing slip.

Will mine look exactly like the picture?

The pictures are design renders. Real pieces can differ in finish and details. Handwork brings small differences in grain, colour and finish. Ask us about the piece before paying.

Innu jaasti bartha? More coming?

Yes. These are the first collection. More crafts, more local stories and uncomfortably familiar personalities follow. Follow @thegubbi to hear first.
